Trans-co (front view)

Trans-co (front view)

This piece, completed in India, is an homage to the hijras of India. It is a cultural mash-up; it depicts a hijra as an icon of feminine beauty on the side of a customized auto-rickshaw (where she becomes a kind of automotive super babe). With wry humor and a kitsch sensibility my piece calls into question the constructs of power that objectify, and at the same time, it celebrates the diversity in customization.

The piece was also inspired by the book,  The Truth About Me: A Hijra Life Story by A. Revathi and  V. Geetha.

10’ x 10’ x 10’

This work is contained in a room that has a sense of forced perspective.  The walls, floor, and ceiling slope creating a real space that plays with the conventions of depicted space.  From the mirror on one end of the room, you can see a figure sitting in the back.  Her lap is covered by a dog, which begins wagging its tail upon your arrival. A secondary dog is lying on the floor.  It begins licking the carpet when you enter the room.
